Examples of What to Look For

This is an example of a REAL phishing email attempt:

Note that the email address is with Yahoo and not the nonprofits own domain.

Also note that the email address ends in .com and not .org.

The email included several images including the actual logo of the nonprofit they were impersonating which has been removed out of respect for their privacy.

Below is some additional text from the phishing email, partially redacted to protect the privacy of the recipient and organization being impersonated.

"Dear [Staff member name] & Team,

I hope this email finds you well. After a long review and careful consideration I see you as a truly deserving candidate to receive a donation from me not just as a regular beneficiary, but also with the opportunity to become an official member and advocate of my foundation. As someone who gives out grants to entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations who [reference to nonprofit being impersonated], I am always on the lookout for individuals who are dedicated to making a positive impact in their communities.

I also want to take this opportunity to inform you of a recent shift in my approach to philanthropy. In light of the [reference to current events], I have decided to focus more on selecting individuals who are in support of my philanthropic efforts and who align with my values and beliefs. Your words of support and encouragement have not gone unnoticed, and I believe that you exemplify the spirit of giving and generosity that I strive to promote through my donations.

I look forward to discussing how I can best support you and your endeavors. Please feel free to reach out to me at your earliest convenience so that we can further discuss how I can help you achieve your goals.
